First loves always conjure butterflies in the stomachs of those who feel them. This vessel is an ode to one of my first loves: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Then who may this young girl be? Very early on in Raiders, we discover that on top of being an adventurer who always makes it out alive, he is an archaeology professor at a prestigious university. During a lesson, a bold, young student bats her eyelashes at her teacher and reveals that she has written “love you” across her eyelids for him to notice. This piece is not a discussion for what films are allowed to be made a contemporary age but is one that allows us to question power dynamics and an attraction to authority. I modernized her look so that she fit into today’s world, painting on red eyeliner to follow current makeup trends and a septum piercing.
