Tile Diary (2019) clay, glaze, oxides, tile mortar, wood

A hard subject that has heavily influenced a lot of my work is the grief that came with the loss of my brother with whom I was very close. He was my best friend for a very long time and this topic is something that Iā€™m still processing ing in my life as well as in my work. The images on these tiles came from drawings and notes I wrote within six months of his passing. Using a variety of materials ranging from stiff to states of melting, I try and capture the flow and weight of the imagery as it relates to feelings of grief, washing over me or melting me down. Tiling these thoughts and images together cements them into a narrative I have created for myself in an attempt to figure out where I stand before the weight of grief.
